The mesh
The mesh is the shared place where organisations that do not share a system agree on work, do it, and both hold a record neither can quietly revise — coordination between organisations, which is a different product from orchestration inside one.
Bilateral integrations are cheaper until the eleventh one. Then you needed the mesh all along.
Orchestration inside a single company is a solved category. The unsolved one is coordination between companies that will never run each other’s software: they need a neutral place to agree work, execute it, and each keep a record the other cannot revise. That is the mesh — every action lands proposed, a human at each participating organisation consents before anything is real, and no argument or flag produces an approved fact on its own.
The economic argument is a threshold one. A pair of organisations is cheaper to wire together directly; the mesh wins once the number of participants passes the point where bilateral integrations multiply faster than anyone can maintain them. The falsifier is that bilateral integrations stay cheaper even past that threshold, which would make the mesh a solution to a problem organisations route around.
