Portable standing
Portable standing is reputation, history and entitlement that travel with their holder between surfaces and remain verifiable by parties who do not trust the issuer.
Standing that cannot leave the surface that issued it is not standing. It is a score.
Identity systems fail at the point of departure. Inside the issuing platform they work well: history accumulates, privileges unlock, behaviour improves. Step outside and it evaporates, which means every new surface starts its users at zero and every user starts each surface as a stranger.
Portability requires the holder to control the identifier, the standing to be attested rather than asserted, and a verification path that does not route back through the issuer’s permission. The third is where most designs quietly fail.
The condition became urgent when agents arrived. A workforce of software must prove what it is and who authorized it to counterparties with no prior relationship — which is the same problem, with no option to fall back on the human recognising a face.
