Audit trail

An audit trail is a system-written record of what was instructed, by whom, under what authority, and what resulted — sufficient for a party outside engineering to reconstruct any action after the fact.

Logs are a byproduct of engineering. An audit trail is a deliberate promise.

The practical test is not whether the system logs. It is whether anyone outside engineering has ever answered a real question with the logs. If the answer is no, the company has telemetry, not evidence.

A trail becomes evidence when it is written by the system rather than assembled afterwards, carries identity on every action, records the authority under which the action was taken, and cannot be edited to make a problem disappear.

It is also a product requirement rather than a compliance one, which founders discover the first time a user asks why something happened. “The system did it” does not survive a support queue. Attribution turns that question into a lookup.
